Authentication and Legalization for International Use

Certain foreign governments and organizations require Canadian documents to undergo a verification process before they can be used internationally. This process consists of two main steps: Authentication and Legalization.

  • Authentication: The Canadian government verifies the signature and seal of the notary public. In Ottawa, you can have your documents authenticated at Global Affairs Canada free of charge.

  • Legalization: After authentication, documents must be legalized by the embassy or consulate of the country where they will be used. Contact the relevant embassy for details on procedures, fees, and processing times.

Global Affairs Canada now offers an Apostille service for a wide variety of documents, streamlining the process significantly.

Common Documents Eligible for Apostille:

  • Adoption Records

  • Affidavits

  • Agent Authorization Letters
